Saving Money for a Cause

"Don't think of saving money as a punishment. Think of saving money as a lifestyle change and a means to freedom."
- Emily G. Stroud

Saving money is not as hard as it seems. The idea of it, many think it's a punishment. A punishment that would not let you spend money on the things that you love the most. But when we actually try to do it and maybe get used to it, you would see the change in you and the freedom that saving money bring. From saving money, you have the freedom to do things you love and are very helpful, too, for emergency purposes. Saving money gives you freedom that you once had in a short time, but now you can enjoy in a long time.

Last November, we were tasked to save our daily 'baon' (Filipino term for pocket money). The goal of the project was to learn how to save and learn how to share what we had. Each day, we would take note of our expenses, sum it all up and reduced it in our 'baon', then the remaining of it was the amount of our daily save. We would put it in our wallets or alkansiya (piggy banks).

It was an advantageous experience. From this, we had learned how to budget our 'baon' in a day, how to incorporate and budget the other expenses that we needed to buy. From this, we had learned that in the future, we really do need an extra money for other businesses, our wants and for our safety and security. I think, from this project, I had improve my knowledge of the importance of saving money.

"For it is in giving that we receive."
- St. Francis of Assisi

Giving is one of the most precious action that one could make. You give something important to someone and seeing them joyous with just those simple gifts makes you feel at ease and makes you feel touched. Giving something is an act that everyone could do, even with littlest things you have, you could make a difference, you could turn the tables of someone's life. From giving, we receive new friends, family and, of course, love. I do believe that the more blessings we have, the more opportunity that we could share those blessings to someone in need and with the idea of that it makes me feel heavenly.

The next task we were assigned to do was to combine all our expenses and buy gifts for our maintenance staff. We were grouped with three members and combined our 'ipon' and we planned thoroughly on how to budget the amount of what we have to all of our expenses. We planned to buy sacks of rice and canned goods.

The staff that we were assigned to was, recently, a fire victim. So we thought that these simple gifts would really make him and us so happy because he received something he needed the most in his situation and because, also, of the thought that we helped someone. Although the expenses went overboard and we had to use our personal money to cover up the exceeded amount, we still willingly did that because of the idea that these gifts would really be highly appreciated by our staff. So, after buying, we made liquidations and we gave it to the maintenance staff.

By the time we gave it to him, we were touched by his reaction. We can see that he was very happy and very touched. With just that image of his smile playing in our minds, it always reminded us how we greatly helped someone in need. We were truly overjoyed with just that simple thought because we never knew we could do something like that. At one time, we were just underestimating that we could not do something so good like that, but in the end we did it and that thought was simply just amazing to think that  we outdid ourselves.

The whole experience was just pure happiness. Happiness for us and for the people we helped. We were overwhelmed of the feeling that we made someone smile from ear to ear and the feeling of that someone being gifted with something so special to them. I do believe that these things, we could do it, just a little confidence and self-esteem, we would really be willing to extend a helping hand to those who are in need. Everything that had happened was just amazing and it really made me happy since it already had a mark in my hearts and my mind.
