Love and the Villains: How Cupid and Psyche & Lynceus and Hypermnestra conquered it all

They said, "Love conquers all". No matter the ups and downs and the sacrifices you have to make, if you love someone, you will take the risk. This is what Cupid, Psyche, Lynceus, and Hypermnestra showed towards their lovers. They had many hindrances ranging from their mother and father to their sisters. But, not all love stories are the same. These two couples may convey the same message, but what makes their love story different from one another are the hardships they went through before they reached happily ever after.

Here is a comparison of their love stories.

There are some parts in the story that wasn't included in the diagram above. From Cupid and Psyche's story, Psyche's sisters were the people who told Psyche to light her husband with a lamp then stab him if he were the monster that the townfolks said was living in the mountain top. This led to Cupid being wounded and hiding from Psyche. In real life, these are the instincts of overprotective siblings. Of course, they would only want men or women who would make you happy and not let you cry. But, what's different is that Psyche's sisters were jealous of her wealth, so when Psyche came back to Earth after wounding Cupid, her sisters, deep inside, were happy because of the outcome. This act clearly shows how vain her sisters were.

In another part, Venus gave Psyche tasks to prove to her she was worthy of her son. On the other hand, Danaus was an overprotective father who knew his twin's sons were dangerous and beastly, so he told her daughters to kill them after the wedding. Both show real-life characteristics of parents. Parents are too concerned about the people with who you will be spending your life. Some even go to the extent of interrogating their child's boyfriend or girlfriend. But then again, this doesn't seem to be the case for Venus. Yes, she was protecting her son, but also she's doing it for her own pleasure. She was angry that people named Psyche as 'Venus' because of her beauty. So much for being an evil mother-in-law.

In general, love between two sweethearts wouldn't be successful if there is no villain. Villains make our love stories, or even our life, interesting. It tests our bond and trust for each other. All we have to do is to show those villains that no wall would separate two people who love each other with their whole being. It's the only way to tell them that "Love conquers all".
